In 1998, 381 girls under 18 conceived in Hull – a rate of 84.6 per 1,000 girls.
According to the most recent figures available, 316 girls under the age of 18 conceived in 2009 – a rate of 64 per cent per 1,000 girls and a 24.3 per cent reduction since 1998.
Miss Teasdale said if nothing had been done to tackle the problem and the rate had continued at the 1998 level, an extra 715 girls would have become pregnant.

so 1998, 381 "knocked up" would be 8.46% of girls under 18.

2009, 316  "knocked up" would be 6.4% of girls under 18.

In the real world this is 2.06% reduction rather than a head line grabbing statment of 24.3%

Anybody here smart enough to work out how many girls there was in 1998 under 18 & how many in 2009 ?

Sorry crap at maths even with a calc. Though I would say 1.7% less due to population decrease in the city.

Then Hull needs to up its game then Tel as letting them shuffle over to the East Riding might be taking the future of Hull away when they are needed most.

I'd say there were:
4504 girls under 18 in 1998, and
4938 girls under 18 in 2009
I did this by finding out how many times the number per thousand fitted in the total number who were in pod and then  multiplying that by 1000...
Same as percentages, but a bit quicker...

I'm a Numbers fan...

My figures are rounded up. But I guess the figures of those in pod got rounded too if they went to full term (not sure if that would be a school term for some of them)

Not as rounded as they were at full term.  Though it makes no difference for them providing they could add up the ammout of benefits they would get sadly. Wasted life for some. That tough is something else.

That seems a lot more complicated than using percentages.

To find out the original starting figure you simply do the opposite of what you'd do to find out percentage of a total gives. In this instance simply divide 381 by 0.0846 (8.46%) which gives you the total of 4503. Doing the same with the other figure does indeed give 4937.
Gold star for you for working it out the more complicated way.

I'll work out where they get the 24% from.
